Song of Houston
Few Houstonians were actually born in the city of Houston. The stories of where we come from and how we arrived here are represented in Song of Houston, a celebration of Houston, its people, and its diverse cultural influences.
The Song of Houston, highlights the diversity of Houston and celebrates its eclectic beauty. This celebration culminated in the world premiere of The Refuge, an original opera written by Christopher Theofanidis and librettist, Leah Lax. Houston Grand Opera incorporated the artwork and writings of WITS students in the performances.
The Song of Houston collaboration has touched thousands of Houston children. The project has allowed children, whose voices may not have been heard otherwise, the opportunity to chime in a chorus of celebration, both of the city and of themselves.
The Refuge celebrates in words and in music the stories of hundreds of immigrants from the African, Central American, Indian, Mexican, Pakistani, Soviet-era Jewish and Vietnamese communities who have made Houston their home. Likewise, this collaboration between WITS and HGO celebrates the voices of the children of these communities in essays, stories, poems, and art.
