Role Summary:
Writers in the Schools (WITS) seeks a Communications Coordinator to play a central role in shaping and sharing the organization’s public voice. This position is ideal for a creative, detail-oriented communications professional with excellent writing skills and a strong interest in digital storytelling, arts education, and community engagement. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for executing day-to-day communications across platforms—social media, email, website, and promotional materials—while collaborating closely with program and development staff to ensure alignment with organizational goals. The role offers a meaningful opportunity for growth in strategy, campaign planning, and brand development. Success in this role will be measured by consistent, high-quality content delivery; increased engagement across digital platforms; and effective promotion of WITS programs, events, and initiatives.

Storytelling: Bring the WITS story to life through compelling written and visual content that reflects a clear, consistent brand voice.

Community Connection: Strengthen relationships with students, families, artists, donors, partners, and the broader Houston arts community through thoughtful, engaging communications.

Organizational Growth: Use digital communications to support program participation, audience development, and fundraising efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
Campaign Planning & Coordination:
-
Develop a comprehensive annual communications plan with support from ED, development and program teams
-
Support the planning and execution of communications strategies for major programs and initiatives, including the Houston Youth Poet Laureate program, workshops, and public events

Collaborate with program and development teams to ensure messaging alignment and timely promotion

Collaborate with the development team to support fundraising campaigns through digital storytelling, email communications, and donor-facing content
Content Creation & Management:
-
Create promotional materials such as flyers, graphics, newsletters, and short-form written content

Capture and edit photography and video content for events and programs, for promotional and archival use

Use emerging tools (including AI-assisted platforms) to support efficient, ethical content creation while maintaining WITS’ voice and values
Digital & Social Media Management:

Manage WITS’ social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn), including content posting, audience engagement, and basic analytics tracking

Maintain a strategic social media calendar using a publishing platform (e.g., Hootsuite)

Assist with production of the monthly e-newsletter via Mailchimp, including writing, editing, and graphic creation

Update and maintain website content to reflect current programs, events, and resources
Event Promotion:

Promote application cycles, workshops, readings, and public events through coordinated digital outreach

Assist with on-site or evening event support as needed
Qualifications:
Required:

Exceptional writing and editing skills

Demonstrated experience managing social media for an organization or brand

Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for events
Preferred:
-
2+ years of experience in communications, marketing, or related work (nonprofit or arts experience a plus)

Experience with email marketing platforms and basic analytics

Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Canva or similar

Photography and/or video experience

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

The Opportunity
WITS is seeking a visionary and relationship-driven Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter of growth and impact. The Executive Director will balance strategic leadership with operational excellence, bringing fundraising expertise, collaborative management, and a deep belief in youth voice and creative expression.
Key Priorities for the First 12–18 Months

Sustain and expand high-quality programs aligned with WITS’ artistic and educational vision

Strengthen and diversify fundraising, including major gifts, foundations, and earned revenue

Lead a forward-looking strategic planning process centered on sustainable growth

Support and elevate staff through inclusive, values-driven leadership

Deepen partnerships with school districts, writers, cultural institutions, and the WITS Alliance
Core Responsibilities:

Advance a clear, inspiring vision for WITS’ future impact

Lead strategic planning in partnership with staff and Board leadership

Strengthen governance through close collaboration with the Board of Directors

Build meaningful partnerships across the arts, education, and nonprofit sectors
Fundraising & External Engagement

Lead a diversified fundraising strategy alongside the Development Director

Cultivate major donors, institutional funders, and long-term supporters

Grow earned revenue in collaboration with program leadership

Serve as a visible ambassador for WITS through storytelling, advocacy, and public engagement
Financial & Operational Management

Ensure strong financial systems that support transparency and sustainability

Align staffing, budgets, and operations with strategic goals

Advance systems and processes that support program excellence and organizational learning
People, Culture & Team Leadership

Inspire and support a talented, mission-driven staff and teaching artist community

Foster a culture rooted in creativity, inclusion, curiosity, and shared accountability

Invest in professional development, retention, and equitable hiring practices
Partnerships & Community Impact

Strengthen relationships with educators, cultural institutions, and community leaders

Maintain Houston’s leadership role within the WITS Alliance

Champion youth voice and arts access across diverse communities
Qualifications
Required
-
At least 7 years of senior leadership experience in nonprofits, education, arts, or youth development

Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor cultivation
-
Experience working closely with a Board of Directors

Strong financial, operational, and team leadership skills

Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities
-
Commitment to equity, access, and culturally responsive practice
Preferred

Experience in arts or arts education
-
Familiarity with Houston’s arts, education, or philanthropic landscape

Experience scaling programs or strengthening organizational infrastructure

Comfort with data-informed decision-making
