Frequently Asked Questions
What is a slam?
A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges. Slams can be loud and lively, with audience participation, cheering and dramatic delivery.
What is Meta4?
As 2023 Brave New Voices International Champion Meta4 Houston is the face of the youth poetry slam scene in Houston. Each year hundreds of teens compete at the Space City Slam Series, vying for one of six coveted spots on the Meta4 team. Meta4 Houston takes the voices of youth to powerful new heights through one-on-one mentorship as well as local and national performance opportunities. Learn more HERE.
How does this work?
Each poet participating in a slam will perform two original poems. Each poem must be under 3 minutes. A panel of five judges will score each poem. The top and bottom scores are dropped and the middle three are averaged. Points will be deducted for poems that go over 3 minutes. Scores for each poet's performance are added together and the top two poets advance to the final Grand Slam. The top six poets at the Grand Slam will become the 2024 META4 Houston Team.
How do I participate in the grand slam?
If I don't place in my first slam can i try again?
If you place as one of the top two poets at your preliminary slam, you will be invited to participate in the Grand Slam on April 4, 2024.
YES! If you don't place in your first slam, we encourage you to come to the next slam and try again.
What happened to Space City slam series?
Space City Slam Series has been renamed META4 Slam Series to better reflect its relationship with the META4 Houston team.
